Member Records

The AIA Library and Archives contains data on more than 100,000 architects who have practiced in the United States. Membership records make up the majority of data. Obituaries, memorial statements, and membership lists may also be available. Nomination binders for architects who have been elevated to the College of Fellows (systematically retained since 1980 and often available for earlier years) provide information on Fellows' achievements.

Membership records are closed during the member's lifetime. However, binders for recent Fellows are available.

Access

The AIA Archives is open by appointment. Non-members must pay a fee of $5 per day to visit the archives.

If you cannot visit the archives in person, archival materials may be photocopied if they are in good condition. Fees for searching and photocopying biographical information from the AIA Library and Archives:

  • Members: $10.00 per name plus $2.00 shipping and handling, for up to 10 photocopies; additional copies at $1.00 per page
  • Non-members: $15.00 per name plus $2.00 shipping and handling, for up to 10 photocopies; additional copies at $1.50 per page.

Please contact the archivist to discuss your information needs. Because archives requests often require complex, time-intensive searching, please allow up to 15 business days for the archivist to let you know what materials are available and what the fee would be.
