Once every five years, the National Architectural Accrediting Board (NAAB) reviews requirements for the accreditation of architecture programs. As part of a collaborative review process, the AIA Board of Directors approved the AIA White Paper in December 2007 addressing priorities of the Institute and their implications for architecture education. The outcome of many discussions and conferences, this paper addresses the importance of

• Reinforcing the centrality of design in the education of architects
• Instituting a new level of sustainable design education
• Including formal training and experience in leadership and collaboration
• Preparing for a more integrated approach to design and practice
• Cultivating a diverse and inclusive profession
• Informing students of the importance of internship and licensure

The AIA Draft White Paper for the NAAB Accreditation Review Conference was posted on the AIA web site for a 45-day open comment period from September 14-October 29, 2007. Over seventy comments were received. The EPN is grateful for the insight from all those who commented.

The AIA White Paper is part of a broader accreditation review process.

The NAAB Accreditation Review Conference Task Force has focused their efforts on research of the following topics: the Evolution of Conditions and Student Performance Criteria, International/Global Trends, Trends in Accreditation, Trends in Education, Trends in Regulation, Trends in the Professions, and Emerging Accreditation Models. If you have an opinion, suggestion, or idea you would like to contribute regarding one of these topics, please go to the NAAB Accreditation Review Forum.
