Dear Members of the AIA Center for Building Science and Performance
(CBSP):
As the 2008 chair, I thank you for your continued membership in
CBSP, and would like to take this opportunity to update you on our
recent accomplishments and plans for this year.
We are pleased to count nearly 11,000 AIA members amongst
the CBSP numbers. As we proceed, please keep the mission of
CBSP in mind:
The CBSP Knowledge Community promotes architects as leaders in the
application of building science and building performance, as well
as in the use of high-performance design criteria, codes, standards
for architecture, and current energy reduction regulations. We
promote building enclosures that are energy efficient, sustainable
and durable, and in so doing support and promote the AIAs new
goal of reducing fossil fuel emissions by 50% by the year 2010, and
by 100% by the year 2030.
The Center educates architects on regulatory, performance,
technical and building science issues and how those issues
influence architecture. We also educate the architectural
profession on programming, designing, and managing building
performance. Additionally, CBSP investigates and disseminates
information regarding building performance best practices,
criteria, measurement methods, planning tools, occupant comfort,
and heat/air/moisture interfaces between the interior and exterior
of buildings.
2008 CBSP Programs and Initiatives
CBSP Workshop at the AIA National Convention, Boston:
60 Oxford Street: Building Enclosure Design Award Winner 2007
May 14, 2008
1:00 5:00 p.m.
Earn 3.75 HSW LUs
Speakers:
George Blackburn, AIA
Richard M. Jones, AIA, NCARB, LEED AP
In November 2007, the Boston Society of Architects' Building
Enclosure Council awarded the First Annual Building Enclosure
Design Award to 60 Oxford Street in Cambridge, Massachusetts. The
first building in Harvard University's North Yard Lab Campus is a
high-security office and computer lab that houses University
Information Systems and the Department of Engineering and Applied
Sciences. Harvard University, Perry Dean Rogers | Partners
Architects and Lee Kennedy Company, Inc. designed and constructed a
LEED certified building enclosure that not only effectively manages
heat, air, moisture and daylight, but also includes a series of
innovations that illustrates the craft, science, and engineering of
high-performance building enclosures.
Learning Objectives:
-
Examine the architectural expression and process of energy and
daylight modeling
-
Discuss the benefits of building enclosure commissioning from
design through construction
-
Obtain a better understanding of sustainable design strategies in
the design of high-performance building enclosures
CBSP Disaster Performance Assessment Symposium
CBSP hosted a symposium at the AIA National headquarters on March
7, 2008: Disaster Resilience through Mitigation Planning and
Building Performance. The primary purpose of the symposium
was to determine the most effective roles for architects on
disaster performance assessment teams. We formed alliances with
various agencies and organizations and look forward to architects
becoming integral members of disaster performance assessment teams.
We reviewed metrics associated with assessing a structures
disaster resilience, from manmade and natural causes, through
FEMAs new mitigation tool. We learned why structures failed
from various natural disasters and how to build back better both
domestically and internationally. USAID presented the lessons
learned from various disasters throughout the world. We learned the
role building codes play in disaster mitigation. , as well as how
insurance operations can get up and running immediately after a
disaster. Members of the Unified New Orleans Plan explained the
process necessary to facilitate the recovery and rebuilding of New
Orleans, from architectural, urban planning and social
perspectives. Highlights from the Symposium will soon be posted on
the CBSP website. Many of
these exciting presentations will be available in audio form, as
well as through webinars and podcasts; watch the CBSP website for
more information!
Conference reports from past CBSP symposia and roundtables can be
found at http://www.aia.org/cbsp_conference_reports.
A fall symposium is planned on Building Commissioning. More
information will be available on the CBSP website: www.aia.org/cbsp.
Development and Implementation of Automated Code Checking in the
U.S.
We were very pleased to welcome to our spring Symposium presenters
from such important organizations as the Federal Emergency
Management Agency (FEMA) and the International Codes Council (ICC).
CBSP supports the ICCs efforts toward the development of
SMARTcodes, the new, cutting-edge tool that will automate code
compliance checking, and we invite you to submit your opinions
about how SMARTcodes might facilitate your work process through a
survey. This survey is completely anonymous and should not take
longer than 10 minutes. We ask that you submit your responses no
later than April 23, 2008.
Resources for CBSP Members Through Component and Allied
Organization Collaboration
Through a partnership with NIBS and local AIA components, Building
Enclosure (Envelope) Councils (BECs) are diverse in membership and
promote cross-disciplinary and cross-responsibility dialogue,
laterally between professions and vertically between designers,
manufacturers, suppliers, fabricators, constructors, building
operators, developers, and insurers. They actively promote and
encourage discussion, training, education, technology transfer, and
the exchange of information about local issues and cases, relevant
weather conditions, and all matters concerning the building
enclosure and the related science. For more information on the
history of the BECs, see http://www.aia.org/bsci_a_bec;
for information on BEC National, see http://www.bec-national.org.
BEC Breakfast at AIA Convention:
E11: Building Enclosure Council Breakfast and Lecture
May 15, 2008
7:00 AM - 8:00 AM
$35
We will start by reviewing the Canadian precedent, which describes
how building enclosure councils work in Canada. The AIA and BETEC
alliance that formed the BECs will then be described, as will the
roles of each organization and the local chapters. The next steps
and the potential of this network in local, national, and
international collaborations will be explored. Attendees will be
engaged in a discussion inviting action in this vital practice
area.
Best 1: Building
Enclosure Science and Technology
June 10 - 12, 2008
Minneapolis Convention Center
Minneapolis, MN
This inaugural biennial international conference on Building
Enclosure Science and Technology (BEST) will be held June 10-12,
2008, at the Minneapolis Convention Center, hosted by
BEC-Minnesota. The conference will carry out BETEC's mission in
exploring the advancement of the energy efficiency of buildings, as
well as moisture, the indoor environment and the durability of
buildings.
Three items will be presented and discussed at this meeting:
-
Bugs, Mold, and Rot IV: Do We Know What We Don't Know About Fungal
Growth, Corrosion and Decay in Building Materials?
-
Energy Efficiency in Buildings: Where Are We and Where Should We Be
Going?
-
Fenestration: Optimizing Glass as a Solution to Energy
Concerns
For more information about the conference, the program, the
speakers, exhibiting, and on-line registration, please go to www.thebestconference.org.
