Dear Members of the Corporate Architects and Facility
Management Knowledge Community (CAFM):
As the 2008 chair, I would like to thank you for your membership in
CAFM. Approximately 6,200 AIA members have identified themselves
with this Knowledge Community. Many are architects, and others are
working as corporate architects and facility managers. We want to
understand your particular interests and challenges and provide
resources for you to network and equip you in your role. As we
continue to move forward please keep the CAFM Mission in
mind:
The CAFM Knowledge Community is a partnership of owners and
architects working for or within corporations or other client
organizations engaging and informing its members to advance their
professional goals and knowledge base. Our mission is to facilitate
the generation and exchange of knowledge valuable to KC members in
order to promote professional development and promote a positive
impact on the built environment.
I would like to take this opportunity to update you on CAFMs
accomplishments for 2007 and inform you of our goals and programs
for this year:
AIA Convention Education and Outreach
-
Education programs at the AIA Convention distribute knowledge to a
cross-section of the profession, and are consistent with the goal
of developing the role of the CAFM KC as the corporate
clients platform within the AIA, and the CAFM KC as the AIA
representative to corporate clients. In 2007, we presented a
workshop on Integrated Practice, a critical issue to our KC
members.
-
In Boston in 2008, CAFM will co-present a half-day workshop on
sustainable design for corporate facilities with the AIA Committee
on the Environment, offering 3.75 CES LUs:

level of sustainable design

Component Connections Events to Engage Members
-
The expertise of architects working in alternative careers is
reinforced by the knowledge generated through CAFM, and their
professional experience and goals can be enhanced through
membership in the AIA. One way that we are doing this is through
our Component Connections events that we are hosting along with the
Public Architects Knowledge Community. These networking events
offer an opportunity to meet with local professionals to discuss
the level of interest in developing a CAFM/PA component in their
city. The events are typically held in conjunction with another AIA
event at a venue that would be of interest to architects, corporate
architects, and facility managers.
-
Each year, CAFM organizes and hosts a Networking Reception in
conjunction with the Public Architects KC at the national AIA
Convention. The purpose is to provide an opportunity for KC members
to network, as well as to build a relationship with the AIA
Students (AIAS) membership through their Freedom by Design program.
Sponsorships from the event will provide grant money to AIAS /
Freedom by Design and solicit volunteers for a convention city
Freedom by Design project.

If you will attend the 2008 AIA Convention in Boston, please join
us at this years event:
AIA Committee of Corporate Architects and Facility

Allied Organization Collaboration
-
CAFM build relationships with other Knowledge Communities, academic
institutions with degrees in architecture and facilities
management, and allied organizations including such as the
International Facilities Management Association (IFMA), Building
Owners Management Association (BOMA), Construction Users Roundtable
(CURT), and Corporate Real Estate Network, (CORENET).
-
IFMA (International Facilities Management Association) is a
separate professional organization that represents many of the same
constituents as CAFM. Each year, CAFM collaborates with IFMA to
prepare and present an educational track at the IFMA World
Workplace conference. Please see more information about the 2008
World Workplace conference at: http://www.worldworkplace.org.
CAFM Scholarship and Emerging Professional
Outreach
-
Each year, CAFM awards scholarship(s) to qualified students
interested in pursuing a career related to CAFM. We are pleased to
have the collaboration of AIAS, ACSA, and the American
Architectural Foundation to make this opportunity available to
develop awareness about career opportunities in corporate
architecture and facility management.
